Anna: Do you like living in this city? Tom: Yes, I do. Most people here are very friendly. Anna: Really? Most of the neighbors in my building are quite noisy. Tom: Oh, that’s too bad. My building is quiet. In fact, it’s the most peaceful place I’ve ever lived. Anna: You’re lucky. I think the traffic is the most annoying part of living here. Tom: True, but we have great food. Most restaurants in the center are fantastic. Anna: Yes! And most of my friends love eating out. We should go to a restaurant tonight. It’s a great excuse to relax. Tom: Sounds like a plan. It will be a nice reward after a long week.

We use the word most to talk about the majority of something, but the rules change depending on if we are talking in general, about a specific group, or comparing things.
1. Most (General)
Use most + noun when you talk about things or people in general. Do not use “of” or “the”.
- Most people like pizza. (People in general)
- Most stores are closed on Sundays. (Stores in general)
Common Mistake: Don’t use “the most” or “most of” for general statements.
- ❌ The most people like music.
- ❌ Most of people like music.
- ✅ Most people like music.
2. Most of (Specific)
Use most of + the / my / these + noun when you talk about a specific group.
You must use a determiner (like the, my, your, his, this, those) after most of.
- Most of the students in this class are very smart. (A specific group of students)
- Most of my colleagues take the bus to work. (Specific colleagues)
You can also use most of with object pronouns (us, you, them):
- Most of us are tired.
- I ate most of it.
3. The most (Superlative)
Use the most to say that something is number one or has the maximum amount or degree. It is the superlative form of “much” and “many”.
- This is the most beautiful city in the world. (Superlative adjective)
- Who has the most money? (Comparing an amount)
- I liked this movie the most. (Comparing an action)
- Most + noun: General groups (e.g., Most cars…)
- Most of + the/my + noun: Specific groups (e.g., Most of my friends…)
- The most: Superlative, comparing (e.g., The most expensive…)
