Emma: Hey, Mark. You look lost in thought. What are you thinking about?

Mark: Oh, I am considering changing my major. I am studying biology right now, but I don’t think it’s for me.

Emma: Really? But you love science! You always have the best grades in our class.

Mark: I know I do, but I am finding the lab work completely exhausting. It just takes up too much of my time.

Emma: I understand. I realize it’s a difficult choice, but you need to follow your passion. What are you planning to do instead?

Mark: I am having a meeting with the career counselor this afternoon. We are going to look at some options. I think I want to try graphic design.

Emma: That sounds exciting! I believe you have a lot of creative talent. Let me know how the meeting goes!

Most verbs in English describe actions. We call these dynamic verbs (like run, play, or eat), and we can use them in both the Present Simple and Present Continuous.

However, some verbs describe a state, a feeling, or a possession. We call these state verbs. Generally, we do not use state verbs in the continuous form.

State Verbs

State verbs include verbs of feeling (love, hate, like), thinking (believe, know, suppose), and possession (belong, own, possess).

warningWARNING

Common mistake: Do not use the continuous form for permanent states or feelings.

  • I am knowing the answer.I know the answer.
  • She is belonging to the club. She belongs to the club.
lightbulbTIP

In informal English or advertising, you might hear a state verb in the continuous form to emphasize a strong, temporary feeling right now (like “I’m lovin’ it!”). However, in standard grammar, stick to the simple form: “I love it.”

Verbs That Change Meaning

Some verbs can be both state and dynamic, but their meaning changes depending on the form! Two of the most common examples are think and have.

Think

  • State (opinion / belief): I think this is a good idea.
  • Dynamic (mental process right now): I am thinking about what to make for dinner.

Have

  • State (possession / relationship): I have two siblings.
  • Dynamic (experiencing / eating): I am having lunch right now.
format_quoteEXAMPLE
  • A: Do you have a car?
  • B: Yes, but right now I am having a problem with the engine.
infoNOTE

Other verbs that change meaning include see (to understand vs. to meet someone) and taste (how food is vs. the action of testing food).
