Alice sits with her sister near a river. Her sister is reading a book.

Alice is bored. She looks at the book, but it has no pictures. It has no conversations.

Alice thinks,

“A book without pictures is not very interesting.”

The day is hot. Alice feels sleepy. She thinks about making a flower necklace with white flowers called daisies.

Suddenly, something strange happens.

A White Rabbit with pink eyes runs past her.

The rabbit says,

“Oh no! I am late!”

Alice is surprised.

Then the rabbit takes a watch from its pocket and looks at the time.

Alice has never seen a rabbit with a pocket or a watch.

She is very curious.

She runs after the rabbit across a field.

The rabbit jumps into a big rabbit hole under a bush.

Alice follows the rabbit without thinking.

She does not know how she will come back.

The rabbit hole is like a long tunnel.

Then it goes down very quickly.

Alice starts to fall.

She falls into a very deep hole.

She falls slowly, so she has time to look around.

She sees shelves, books, maps, and pictures on the walls.

She takes a jar from a shelf.

The label says:

“ORANGE MARMALADE”

Alice opens the jar, but it is empty.

She does not throw it because she is afraid someone is below her.

Instead, she puts it on another shelf.

While she is falling, Alice thinks,

“After this, going down the stairs will be easy. Everyone at home will think I am very brave.”
